Question: Is the assumption of trait independence implied in Westoby's (1998) leaf‐height‐seed (LHS) ecology strategy scheme upheld in a Mediterranean grazing system dominated by annuals? Is the LHS approach applicable at the community level? Location: Northern Israel. Methods: LHS traits (specific leaf area [SLA], plant height and seed mass), and additional leaf traits (leaf dry matter content [LDMC], leaf area, and leaf content of nitrogen [LNC], carbon [LCC], and phosphorus [LPC]), were analyzed at the species and community levels. Treatments included manipulations of grazing intensity (moderate and heavy) and protection from grazing. We focused on species comprising 80% of biomass over all treatments, assuming that these species drive trait relationships and ecosystem processes. Results: At the species level, SLA and seed mass were negatively correlated, and plant height was positively correlated to LCC. SLA, seed mass, and LPC increased with protection from grazing. At the community level, redundancy analysis revealed one principal gradient of variation: SLA, correlated to grazing, versus seed mass and plant height, associated with protection from grazing. We divided community functional parameters into two groups according to grazing response: (1) plant height, seed mass, LDMC, and LCC, associated with protection from grazing, and (2) SLA, associated with grazing. Conclusions: The assumption of independence between LHS traits was not upheld at the species level in this Mediterranean grazing system. At the community level, the LHS approach captured most of the variation associated with protection from grazing, reflecting changes in dominance within the plant community.  相似文献

Questions: What influence do management practices and previous tree and shrub stand structure have on the occurrence and development of natural regeneration of Pinus sylvestris in Mediterranean mountain forests? How are the fine‐scale and environmental patterns of resources affected and what impact does this have on the distribution of the regeneration? Location: A Pinus sylvestris Mediterranean mountain forest in central Spain. Methods: Upperstory trees and regeneration (seedlings and saplings) were mapped in four 0.5‐ha plots located in two types of stand with different management intensities (even‐aged and uneven‐aged stands). Environmental variables were recorded at the nodes of a grid within the plots. The relationships between the upperstory and regeneration were evaluated by bivariate point pattern analysis; redundancy analysis ordination and variation partitioning were performed to characterize regeneration niches and the importance of the spatial component. Results: Seedlings and saplings presented a clumped structure under both types of management and their distribution was found to be related to the spatial distribution of favourable microsites. Regeneration was positively related to conditions of partial cover with high soil water content during the summer. More than half of the explained variance was spatially structured in both types of stand. This percentage was particularly high in the even‐aged stands where the pattern of regeneration was highly influenced by the gaps created by harvesting. Conclusions: The spatial distribution of the tree and shrub upperstory strongly influences regeneration patterns of P. sylvestris. Current management practices, promoting small gaps, partial canopy cover and moderate shade in even‐aged stands, or favouring tree and shrub cover in the case of uneven‐aged stands, appears to provide suitable conditions for the natural regeneration of P. sylvestris in a Mediterranean climate.  相似文献

利用数量分类学手段对福建武夷山和江苏宝华山不同居群野生早樱形态特征进行了比较研究。通过对2大居群24项形态指标的分析,不论是聚类分析还是主成分分析,2大居群的各个个体均归并为2类,自然体现出不同居群野生早樱表型特征的较大差异。主成分分析显示,叶部特征的长度、宽度、叶基夹角等,以及花部特征的花萼筒、花冠幅、花序总梗等是造成不同居群野生早樱表型差异的主要因素,单因素方差分析也印证了这一结论。最后,建议在分类学关系上将福建武夷山野生早樱做为大叶早樱新变种处理。  相似文献

研究探讨依据基因组结构对根瘤菌进行系统发育分类的可行性。采用I-CeuI酶切及脉冲场电泳分析确定25株根瘤菌模式菌株的基因组结构,据此对根瘤菌进行聚群,并与16S rRNA聚群结果相比较。依据基因组结构的近似或不同,25株根瘤菌共分为11个基因组型(genome type,GT)。这些基因组型与依据16S rRNA序列的聚群结果大体一致,其不同之处显示了两种方法各自的特点。因此,基因组的物理结构,即本研究中rm纵子的数量及其在基因组上的位置,可作为系统发育关系的标志而用于根瘤菌的分类。  相似文献

A set of moss samples (n=58) was collected and analysed to obtain modern pollen analogues for both natural and human induced vegetation types in northern Fennoscandia. Vegetation types with settlement, trampling and grazing were selected from the different latitudinal forest zones (birch, pine, and mixed forest). The moss species varied between samples but the size of the sample was kept constant. Numerical analyses such as Redundancy Analysis (RDA) indicate that in northern areas human presence is mainly visible as increased values of Gramineae, Rumex acetosa/acetosella, R. obtusifolius, Solidago-type and Achillea-type pollen. Partial RDA further reveals that settlement is strongly correlated with high values of Rumex acetosa/acetosella, whereas trampled sites are significantly characterised by Gramineae and, to a smaller extent, Cyperaceae pollen. It is therefore possible to distinguish the impact of different types of human activities on vegetation on the basis of the pollen spectra. Later, these data will be used to interpret the presence, nature, and duration of human impact from fossil records from the same area. Received June 6, 2001 / Accepted December 12, 2001  相似文献

为研究高寒草甸大型土壤动物群落组成和分布对环境因子的响应,选取祁连山东段的甘肃省天祝县高原鼢鼠典型分布区域,以鼠丘密度代表干扰强度设置4个干扰区。调查各干扰区植被群落特征、土壤理化性质、大型土壤动物类群组成及其数量,采用约束性排序方法分析环境因子对大型土壤动物类群组成和分布的影响。结果表明:高原鼢鼠干扰下高寒草甸大型土壤动物优势类群为瓦娄蜗牛科、象甲科和短角亚目幼虫;极重度干扰区大型土壤动物类群的丰度、丰富度、Shannon指数显著高于重度干扰区(P<0.05);多元回归分析表明大型土壤动物类群丰度、丰富度和Shannon指数与土壤温度呈显著负相关(P<0.05),丰富度与土壤含水量呈显著负相关(P<0.05),丰度与土壤紧实度呈显著负相关(P<0.05),丰富度和Shannon指数与植物Shannon指数呈显著负相关(P<0.05);冗余分析和偏冗余分析表明,土壤温度、紧实度和含水量是影响高寒草甸大型土壤动物类群组成和分布的主要环境因子。  相似文献

Urbanization of animal habitats has the potential to affect the natural communication systems of any species able to survive in the changed environment. Urban animals such as squirrels use multiple signal channels to communicate, but it is un-known how urbanization has affected these behaviors. Multimodal communication, involving more than one sensory modality, can be studied by use of biomimetic mechanical animal models that are designed to simulate the multimodal signals and be pre-sented to animal subjects in the field. In this way the responses to the various signal components can be compared and contrasted to determine whether the multimodal signal is made up of redundant or nonredundant components. In this study, we presented wild gray squirrels in relatively urban and relatively rural habitats in Western Massachusetts with a biomimetic squirrel model that produced tail flags and alarm barks in a variety of combinations. We found that the squirrels responded to each unimodal component on its own, the bark and tail flag, but they responded most to the complete multimodal signal, containing both the acoustic and the moving visual components, providing evidence that in this context the signal components are redundant and that their combination elicits multimodal enhancement. We expanded on the results of Parian et al. (2009) by providing data on sig-naling behavior in the presence and absence of conspecifics, suggesting that alarm signaling is more likely if conspecifies are present. We found that the squirrels were more active in the urban habitats and that they responded more to tail flagging in the urban habitats as compared to the rural ones, suggesting the interesting possibility of a multimodal shift from reliance on audio to visual signals in noisier more crowded urban habitats.  相似文献

The amino acid gamma-aminobutyric-acid receptors (GABAARs) belong to the ligand-gated ion channels (LGICs) superfamily. GABAARs are highly diverse in the central nervous system. These channels play a key role in regulating behavior. As a result, the prediction of GABAARs from the amino acid sequence would be helpful for research on these receptors. We have developed a method to predict these proteins using the features obtained from Chou's pseudo-amino acid composition concept and support vector machine as a powerful machine learning approach. The predictor efficiency was assessed by five-fold cross-validation. This method achieved an overall accuracy and Matthew's correlation coefficient (MCC) of 94.12% and 0.88, respectively. Furthermore, to evaluate the effect and power of each feature, the minimum Redundancy and Maximum Relevance (mRMR) feature selection method was implemented. An interesting finding in this study is the presence of all six characters (hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity, side chain mass, pK1, pK2 and pI) or combination of the characters among the 5 higher ranked features (pk2 and pI, hydrophobicity and mass, pk1, hydrophilicity and mass) obtained from the mRMR feature selection method. The results show a biologically justifiable ranked attributes of pk2 and pI; hydrophobicity, hydrophilicity and mass; mass and pk1; pk2 and mass. Based on our results, using the concept of Chou's pseudo-amino acid composition and support vector machine is an effective approach for the prediction of GABAARs.  相似文献

There is a close analogy between statistical thermodynamics and the evolution of allele frequencies under mutation, selection and random drift. Wright's formula for the stationary distribution of allele frequencies is analogous to the Boltzmann distribution in statistical physics. Population size, 2N, plays the role of the inverse temperature, 1/kT, and determines the magnitude of random fluctuations. Log mean fitness, , tends to increase under selection, and is analogous to a (negative) energy; a potential function, U, increases under mutation in a similar way. An entropy, SH, can be defined which measures the deviation from the distribution of allele frequencies expected under random drift alone; the sum gives a free fitness that increases as the population evolves towards its stationary distribution. Usually, we observe the distribution of a few quantitative traits that depend on the frequencies of very many alleles. The mean and variance of such traits are analogous to observable quantities in statistical thermodynamics. Thus, we can define an entropy, SΩ, which measures the volume of allele frequency space that is consistent with the observed trait distribution. The stationary distribution of the traits is ; this applies with arbitrary epistasis and dominance. The entropies SΩ, SH are distinct, but converge when there are so many alleles that traits fluctuate close to their expectations. Populations tend to evolve towards states that can be realised in many ways (i.e., large SΩ), which may lead to a substantial drop below the adaptive peak; we illustrate this point with a simple model of genetic redundancy. This analogy with statistical thermodynamics brings together previous ideas in a general framework, and justifies a maximum entropy approximation to the dynamics of quantitative traits.  相似文献

This study examines the relationship between cladoceran species richness and ecosystem functioning. I conducted an experiment in which four cladocerans, Daphnia. magna, D. longispina, D. pulex and Chydorus sphaericus, were cultured in microcosms using different species combinations and levels of species richness. The results demonstrate that even within this closely related group of organisms the effects on ecosystem-level variables, such as total algae and zooplankton biomass, per capita productivity, and nutrient concentrations, as well as phytoplankton community structure, were highly variable between different combinations of these species. Since only four species where involved in this study, species-specific effects dominated the general relationship between species richness and ecosystem functioning. Particular combinations of species resulted in effects that indicated more efficient grazing. These effects, which were most pronounced in combinations including both D. magna and C. sphaericus, were manifested as an indirect effect as the prey community shifted towards grazing-resistant species. As a result, the productivity of the prey community decreased, because phytoplankton species with lower per capita productivity became more dominant. I suggest that the primary mechanism that caused this significant effect was complementarity in prey-size use of D. magna and C. sphaericus. In terms of prey-size range, D. pulex and D. longispina were redundant when D. magna was present and were quickly out-competed by the latter despite higher per capita filtering efficiency. The results show that different mechanisms are important for different combinations of species. Furthermore, the ability of the prey community to respond to changes of consumer species composition is an important factor in experiments in which consumer species richness is experimentally manipulated.
